Bellingham Plays Huge Role in World's First Hydrogen-Powered Ferry

by Briddick Webb

In a cool new step towards green travel, the world’s first passenger ferry powered entirely by zero-emission hydrogen fuel cells, named “Sea Change,” has just hit the waters of San Francisco Bay. This cutting-edge project began in Bellingham, where All American Marine (AAM) built the ferry in their waterfront workshop.

Bellingham’s Role in Maritime Innovation

All American Marine's focus on innovation and sustainability was key to making this happen. Daniel Zech, AAM's Business Development Manager, said the project fits perfectly with their goal of leading the way in shipbuilding innovation.

Building the First Hydrogen-Powered Ferry

Creating the “Sea Change” was no small feat. With no existing guidelines for hydrogen-powered ferries, AAM had to work closely with the Coast Guard and other regulatory bodies to create new standards from scratch. This process took years.

Environmental Impact and Future Prospects

The ferry's hydrogen fuel cells split hydrogen molecules into electrons and protons, generating an electric current with only water vapor as a byproduct. This green alternative to traditional fuel shows how hydrogen fuel cells can significantly cut carbon emissions from maritime transport.

Bellingham at the Forefront

This project shines a spotlight on Bellingham’s capacity for high-tech advancements and commitment to sustainability. The launch of “Sea Change” not only boosted the local economy but also put Bellingham on the map as a leader in the push for cleaner transportation solutions.

As the “Sea Change” begins its journey in San Francisco Bay, it stands as a symbol of what can be achieved through innovation and teamwork. Bellingham can be proud of its part in this historic milestone, paving the way for future breakthroughs in hydrogen-powered travel.
