Summer Home Maintenance Checklist for Whatcom County Homeowners

by Briddick Webb

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy your home, but it's also the ideal season to take care of a few maintenance tasks that can help prevent expensive repairs later.

Thanks to Whatcom County's wet winters and abundance of trees, our homes face a unique set of challenges. Here's a simple checklist to keep your home in great shape.

1. Inspect Your Roof

Check for damaged shingles, loose flashing, and moss growth. Summer's dry weather makes it much easier to spot and address issues before the rainy season returns.

2. Clean Gutters & Downspouts

Pine needles and debris can clog gutters year-round. Make sure water flows freely and is directed away from your home's foundation.

3. Wash Your Home's Exterior

Cleaning siding, windows, decks, and patios removes dirt, pollen, and mildew while helping preserve paint and exterior finishes.

4. Check Your Deck

Inspect for loose railings, soft boards, and popped nails or screws. If needed, clean and reseal the deck to extend its lifespan.

5. Trim Trees & Landscaping

Cut back branches touching your roof or siding and keep vegetation away from your home's exterior to reduce moisture and improve airflow.

6. Service Your HVAC System

Replace air filters, clean outdoor units, and schedule maintenance if needed to keep your heating and cooling system running efficiently.

7. Inspect Exterior Caulking

Check around windows, doors, and trim for cracked or failing caulk. Resealing small gaps now can help prevent water intrusion this fall.

8. Walk Around Your Property

Take 20 minutes to look at your home like a buyer or home inspector would. Watch for peeling paint, drainage concerns, cracked concrete, loose handrails, or fencing that needs repair. Catching small problems early is almost always less expensive than waiting.

Protect Your Investment!

Routine maintenance not only helps preserve your home's value but can also make it more attractive to buyers if you decide to sell in the future.

If you're unsure which repairs are worth tackling, or need recommendations for trusted local contractors, I'm always happy to help.
